Choosing a Religion that is Right for You

Everybody at some time will inquire naturally about life and its foundations. In that search, some find basic philosophies and others turn to religion. With religion, many people practice religion based on the beliefs that they have been raised with which has been rooted in their family’s beliefs. Others, who may have been born into one religion, seek out other religions to fulfill their needs. Yet, others, who were never exposed to religion as children, will go on a life changing search which many times end in religion. There are many religions practiced throughout the world.

Christianity

Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. The teachings and beliefs are based on canonical text found in the New Testament of the Bible. Christians believe that God sent his only son to be born human and to die as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. The most common of the Christian religions include the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church, the Lutheran Church, the Methodist Church and the Baptist Church. There are many other Christian churches which fall under the classification of Christian including nondenominational, which is a conglomeration of the Christian faith, without any particular church affiliation.

Judaism

Judaism is based on the written passages found in the Torah. The religion focuses on the commandments which were said to be shared with Moses at Mount Sinai by God. It is one of the oldest religions based in the belief in one God.

Hinduism

Hinduism is a religion which is most common to India, though it has spread throughout the world. Known as “the eternal law” the religion is a combination of many beliefs and is very open and free for interpretation. Yoga was born out of this religion.

Buddhism

Buddhism is a philosophy based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama. He lived in India around the 5^th century BCE. There are two primary branches of Buddhism, Theravada and Mhayana.

Taoism

Taoism is based on a metaphysical philosophy meaning to show the “way.” The religion actually originated in China. Tao was practiced by Confucius and Zen Buddhists. The foundational text of Tao is Tao Te Ching which is said to explain the natural order of the Universe.

Muslim

The Muslim religion is based on the beliefs stated in the Qur’an, the beliefs of Islam. Muslims believe that one who publicly pronounces their declaration to the faith of Muhammad immediately becomes a member of the faith. Muslims observe daily designated prayer times, fasting and pilgrimages as a part of the faith.

So, as you explore your own spirituality, there are many religions to investigate. Highlighted here are some of the most common but, there are thousands to discover throughout the world.
